A Decade of Hungry for Crawfish

A crawfish boil that started in some friends backyard over a decade ago has turned into one of the biggest fund raisers for Hungry for Music. On May 15th the 10th annual Hungry for Crawfish Event was held and once again it was a smash! Attendees consumed more than 2,000 pounds of crawfish and a truckload of corn, potatoes, and bread. Not to mention a lot of beer and soda. Patrons of the boil were entertained by two very versatile and talented bands: The Grandsons and The Crawdaddies .

This years Hungry for Crawfish raised $7,500.00 and another $500.00 from T-shirt sales.

Much appreciation goes to the hosts whose hard work made the event fun and a huge success.

The hosts are: Hank & Lucy Arrington, Laura Burns, Sarah Comis, Jen Dunleavy, Preston Evers, Janet Harris, Michelle & Brian Holoubek, Julie Johnson, Ben Lawson, Richard & Teresa Lynch, Chuck & Ann Ray, Bruce Sedlack , and Jennifer Weiss .

Benefit for Jorge Mora

Musician-songwriter Jorge "George" Mora , who passed away suddenly in November, was remembered in a benefit concert in March.

Jorge played guitar and bass in countless bands in the Washington, DC area since the 1970s and was respected for his vast repertoire of popular music, as well as his warmth, generosity and enthusiasm.

Jorge was born in Chile and raised in the DC metro area. When he was a youngster, Jorge's parents took their only child to a Beatles concert, which sparked his interest in music. He later served in the US Army and worked in the family camera business but always found time to play in bands. Jorge loved music so much that it is fitting his legacy will give others the opportunity to experience this passion and possibly begin a life-long love affair with music.

"The Jorge Mora Tribute" was March 16, 2003 at Iota Club and Cafe in Arlington, VA. Three bands with whom Jorge was affiliated played: King Teddy (Swing-Rockabilly) , Mojo (Blues-R&B), and Billy Coulter (Rock 'n Roll). At the end of the show, the three bands joined to play two songs "Hey Jude" and "Let it Be" from Jorge's favorite band, The Beatles.

The show raised $1,851, which Hungry for Music will use to purchase instruments for the Latin American Youth Center in Washington, D.C.

8th Annual Hungry For Crawfish Benefit
In May 2002, Hungry for Music held its 8th Annual Hungry for Crawfish Benefit at Fort Hunt Park in Alexandria, VA. Over 500 partygoers converged on the spacious park ground just off the George Washington Parkway near Mount Vernon in support of Hungry for Music.

More than 2,000 pounds of crawfish were boiled throughout the day to a spicy perfection by the Boil Pit Crew (under the direction of Hank Arrington) and satisfied the hungry crawfish lovers.

The Thangs got everyone moving and warmed up with an excellent set of gumbo rock n' roll. Crawfish Boil veterans, The Grandsons (they performed at the first two Hungry for Crawfish benefits), had the pavilion filled with dancers during their set. One of the many highlights of the Boil came when The Grandsons Alan MacEwen led his band and the spirited crowd on a Second Line parade through the pavilion

More than $8,000 was raised in support of Hungry for Music through ticket and T-shirt sales. Hungry for Music would like to thank everyone who came to the Hungry for Crawfish Boil and made it such a fun success.

Also, Hungry for Music would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Crawfish Boil Committee hosts and volunteers for their hardwork and dedication.

1997 Benefits:
3rd Annual Crawfish Boil
More than 1,800 pounds of crawfish were consumed at the 3rd annual Hungry for Crawfish Boil to benefit Hungry for Music. Crawfish are considered a delicacy in many parts fo the Deep South and have come to be synonymous with the culture and people of Louisiana. Crawfish Boils are a traditional gathering by Louisiana natives to be with their family and friends - similar to the classic American barbecue. Most of the Hungry for Crawfish hosts are native Louisianians and it's an opportunity to share their Louisiana culture with new friends "up north". The more the 500 in attendance were treated to three excellent bands, including a traditional cajun group, Squeeze Bayou.

1996 Benefits:
Martin Sexton & Christine Kane perform at Hungry for Music Benefit
Two of the most talked about and up-and-coming artists performed at the fifth Hungry for Music Benefit on the campus of The George Washington University. Martin Sexton showed why he is rapidly gaining national recognition and critical acclaim with a electrifying set. Christine Kane, despite battling a bad cold, turned in a uplifting performance to those in attendance at The George Washington University's Marvin Center Theatre.

The headliners may have critical acclaim, but the show's first half featured inspirational sets by local artists Charles Monk, Mark Nickens, Kenny Haddaway, Charles Solomon, and The Silvertones.

May Hungry for Crawfish Benefit Bash Raises 4,000 Clams
Although a May thunderstorm threatened to break up the party, the 500 plus who attended the 2nd annual Hungry for Crawfish know that "mudbugs" and music are the two great tastes that taste great together.

This year's crowd were treated to an all-you-can-eat crawfish feast and performances by two area bands. Hungry for Crawfish alumni The Grandsons returned to open the event and Jumpin' Jupiter played well past quitting time, as the thunderstorm sent party-goers to the covered pavilion.

The boil held on May 11th at Alexandria's Ft. Hunt Park raised over 4,000 for Hungry for Music - doubling the proceeds from last year's event.

Special thanks to: Hank Arrington, Charlie & Chris Boise, Ray & Bobbi Boyd, Martha Blue, Preston Evers, Julie Frost, Allen & Janet Harris, Lucy Howton, Richard Lynch, Chris & Kahty Morrison, Chuck & Ann Ray, Maggie Ryner, and David & Jennifer Sutherland . Ice Cream was provided by Leafstone, Inc.

1995 Benefits:

The concert featured a tribute to Bob Devlin who had passed away earlier in the year. An after-concert party was held at the Hard Rock Café in downtown Washington, DC.

First Annual Crawfish Boil a Whale of a Success
An eclectic group, composed mostly of transplanted Louisianians, have turned their love of fish and fun to benefit a good cause. These good-hearted folk have turned their semi-annual crawfish feast from a friendly get-together to a benefit for Hungry for Music.

The first crawfish boil was launched on Sunday, April 23, at Ft. Hunt Park in Alexandria, VA. A group of ten volunteer chefs served more than 1,000 pounds of crawfish, as well as potatoes and corn to the more than 250 guests, each of whom paid $20.00 for the five-hour party. Two area bands, Big Night Out and The Grandsons, entertained the crowd throughout the afternoon.

The initial goal of raising $1,000 was surpassed as the event raised nearly $2,000. Nothing fishy about that!

1994 Benefits:

The third Hungry for Music Benefit Concert was held on Sept. 17, 1994. Artists performing were The Smith Sisters, Al Petteway, Emmet Swimming, Kevin Johnson, Kevin Jones, Bob Devlin, Charles Solomon, Charles Monk, Todd Baker, and Chullpara. Steve Hudson hosted the event that was held at The George Washington University Lisner Auditorium.

Jim Hubbard, Founder & Executive Director of Shooting Back , was the host for the evening. The concert was covered by the Channel 4, 7, & 9 news.

1992: In The Beginning
The initial concept of Hungry For Music came about in May of 1987 when Shreveport, LA native Jeff Campbell was assigned by the United States Navy to work at the Pentagon. Jeff was angered and saddened by the homelessness and despair he saw in the Washington, DC area. While the local street musicians he encountered brightened up his day. This contrast inspired the concept of Hungry for Music: why not assemble DC's best street musicians, as well as other local "name" musicians, for a concert to benefit the homeless? The concert would have a dual purpose--to raise money and food for the homeless and to give street musicians some well deserved attention and exposure.

The idea incubated for several years until 1992, when Jeff, enrolled in a human services class at the The George Washington University. Jeff presented the concept to his class, which received the idea with enthusiasm. Members of the class began work on the benefit concert, now named "Hungry for Music". They set a date, found a location, recruited sponsors on campus, found musicians to perform and determined how the proceeds would be spent.

Along with Jeff, key supporters were class members Deb Gromling and Alison Onish ; publicist Trish Shuman, Jim Van Dak of the National Coalition for the Homeless, The George Washington University's Campus Activities Office, Lisner Auditorium and the GW Program Board. Through their efforts and the work of many others, the first annual "Hungry for Music" concert took place on April 15, 1992.

The first Hungry for Music concert was hosted by announcer Damian Einstein of radio.
